Nikola Tesla visited the Carroll County Middle School today. He spoke about his studies, dreams, employment and creation of the theory of alternating current. Tesla's alternating current was controversial at its inception, but permeates nearly all electrical devices today. Tesla was portrayed by Chris Logan Carter of the Children's Theatre of Cincinnati.

Eighth grade social studies students created time capsules about issues from centuries ago, but put a modern twist on them. They have studied George Washington, John Adams, Andrew Jackson, the election of 1800, the first political parties and the War of 1812 over the past couple of weeks. In culmination, they made the time capsules. The capsules had to include six pieces, one thing from each unit. Students made artifacts, such as a campaign button that would have represented what a member of the Federalist party wore. Others created wanted posters and a few made whiskey bottles reflective of Washington’s whiskey rebellion. The entire school was invited to view the exhibits and had a worksheet to complete. The modern piece of the time capsules included QR codes that led students to Google Docs to find the answers to the question on the worksheet.

Sixth and seventh grade students in the CCMS gifted and talented program are using their strengths to become architects. The students are recreating the Colosseum, Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Brandenburg Gate. They used popsicle sticks and hot glue guns to erect the landmarks. The students also had to choose how to share the research they collected, such as creating a poster or a brochure, and had to write and deliver a speech about it as well.
